This May, South Africa observes Anti-Tobacco Campaign Month, a critical campaign to address the harmful consequences of tobacco usage. According to the South African Medical Research Council, smoking-related illnesses kill thousands of people each year, with lung cancer alone accounting for a sizeable proportion of cancer deaths.

Heart disease, exacerbated by smoking, raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and chronic lung disorders make it difficult for many people to breathe. Tobacco use continues to be the greatest cause of preventable death in South Africa, contributing to lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic lung disorders such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The good news? Quitting smoking can improve your health. Lung function improves within weeks, and the risk of heart disease decreases dramatically with time. Anti-Tobacco Campaign Month is the ideal time to take that initial move.

South Africans are encouraged to “Commit to Quit” by obtaining assistance from cessation programmes, counselling, or nicotine replacement therapies available at local clinics.

Quitting tobacco and nicotine products is no easy task, for resources to get started, visit your local health centre or contact organisations such as Smokenders, CANSA, and the National Council Against Smoking.

Living a tobacco-free life involves embracing vitality – greater energy for family, sports, and hobbies. Let’s unite this May to break free from tobacco’s grip.

Commit to quit now for a healthier, smoke-free tomorrow!
